Nobody or Somebody?
I've been reading out of Romans this week and am reading out of both the New King James Version as well as the Message. I really love reading out of the Message, because I feel like it is written in an in-your-face sort of way. Maybe because we don't always understand the language used in NKJV, but in the Message it's contemporary language that you can't tip-toe around...
Romans 4: 17, 18 (From The Message)
We call Abraham "father" not because he got God's attention by living like a saint, but because God made something out of Abraham when he was a nobody. Isn't that what we've always read in Scripture, God saying to Abraham, "I set you up as father of many peoples"? Abraham was first named "father" and then became a father because he dared to trust God to do what only God could do: raise the dead to life, with a word make something out of nothing. When everything was hopeless, Abraham believed anyway, deciding to live not on the basis of what he saw he couldn't do but on what God said he would do. And so he was made father of a multitude of peoples. God himself said to him, "You're going to have a big family, Abraham!"
In other words, what have you claimed to be, and what has God called you to be? Are you walking in line with His plan for your life? Or, are you living life as a nobody when God has clearly called YOU to be a somebody. We tend to limit ourselves, because we are unable to see beyond our view, our perspective. BUT, if we can realize that God cannot only see our view, but he sees what's behind us, what's in front of us, what is beside us -- our distractors -- he sees it all. God gets it. He is capable of seeing the big picture when all we can see is the small part of a big plan. Why not look up to him and trust Him to lead? Like the passage says, Abraham was given the title "father" before he actually became a father. So, God could be calling you to be something that may be way far away from your imagination, but that's why it's important to listen to Him, seek Him, and obey Him when he calls you to act and to be a somebody. I don't know about anyone else, but this is so awesome! I am so thankful that God calls me to be a somebody and that he sees me through his own capabilities and not my own. Because of this, my life is valuable - not because of what I have done or haven't done, but because of who God has created me to be and because of what He has done!
